Double faced carpet tape has really aggressive adhesive. That is what is needed for holding carpet to the floor, especially if the floor is uneven or in poor condition.
In order to keep the tape from sticking to itself when it is on the roll, one side is covered by a non-adhesive vinyl liner that needs to be peeled off before the tape is used.
Aggressive adhesive can make it difficult to get the liner off, particularly on a new roll.
To get the liner off, tear the tape instead of cutting it. That will give you a ragged edge and force the backing to release from the adhesive. All you need is a small loose tab of liner and you can start peeling off the backing.
Not only is it quick to tear the tape instead of cutting it, you can also get the job done without any tools.
